Engrave Your Valuables

Did you know that insurance companies are likely to raise your rates (and possibly your deductible) as a result of a burglary? Make it easier for the police to identify and locate your stolen property, and make your traceable property less attractive to thieves by taking the time to mark your property. The following information may also be useful for accurate insurance reports.

Here's some useful information about engraving your valuables:

  • Please engrave your property with one of the following: Driver's license number, Social security number, Insurance policy number, a Secret number of your choice.
  • You may wish to engrave the number in at least two places on the object.
  • After you purchase an item, locate and record the following useful information and store the information in a safe place: Serial number, Make, Model, Any other identifying features.
  • If your item is stolen from you, give Police a complete description of the property. Include the number engraved on the item and where it is engraved on the property.
  • Do not engrave jewelry, paintings, silverware, or antiques.
  • Take a picture or make a video of your valuables, and store this in a safe place.

The purpose is to make your property easier to recover in the event that it is stolen or lost.
